What Is Sealed

11/02/2024
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
Song of Solomon

Notice here what love wherewith our Heavenly Father has loved us of Ephesians 2:4. See, it’s all well and good to speak of earthly love of course. Yet it pales in and of itself when compared with that love from above which shall never pass away. It seems then the text mentions a number of things in quick succession with very little explanation. So then let’s see how these all relate to each other. Perhaps there are a number of things on which you and I would not agree. But for the moment notice with me the love as “strong as death” if you will. Since we have not an understanding, it’s best to start somewhere. So also do we love him because he first loved us in 1 John 4:19. Nor was his love that messy sort as some are wont to speak. In John 3:16 we find that his love prompted him to act, to send his only begotten of the Father, and to give his life a ransom for many. It is a love that few others can touch nor does it come without proofs. So his love expressed itself in jealousy. So often some think jealousy to be a bad thing. Yet it causes God to care and show strong concern over what you do, where you go, and with whom you spend your time. As in 2 Corinthians 11:2, we see that such is godly as the church the espoused wife meets Christ her husband. So has he bought her through the washing of water at the hands of his Word. Yet should the waters suddenly rise up, swift and rushing as though to carry you away, his love still holds you. So does 2 Samuel 18:16 testify of such even to the drawing from out of many waters. See, it was never God’s plan to feed you this way or even to walk you through fire lest it kindle upon you. See, God is not like that. He who left Heavens glory like the nobleman who went into a far country, gave up his whole house for those of this world. Yet at no time has he ever left it alone. Herein is found what love looks like, as the very picture of “the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth” seen in John 1:14. Should we like David from him run and flee even there would the Lord in his love not leave us alone. So then he will not let any just go their own way without bringing them back or chasing them even down to the grave. David himself found that from the shadow of death, the deepest pits of hell, to even the highest mountain there was God’s presence to be found. Herein is found though more than a presence but rather the very infolding of God. See, as a sheep in Isaiah 53 you might have gone astray and wandered off to the places where the wild waters and chaotic pastures grow. Yet still would he come and carry us back home as the Good Shepherd which gave his life for the sheep. Might this then be what it means to be carried home again, set as a seal upon his arm to from him wander no more. Then with him would we stay close by his side always fed and safe from all harm, just as our Father intended. So too are the coals before his altar, kept in remembrance always even as in Revelation 8:3 offered with the fire and the prayers of the saints. Knowing his heart and his love then, let us make amends and walk as those kept close by his side for always.
