What Do You Wear?

Ephesians 6:14-17
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

At times the standing seems long and the journey mighty tiresome. So it may feel like a warriors work is never done. I don't know if you have ever seen how a statue stands unbothered by the sages. It is sort of the same only written in these blessed pages. Now you might not have heard it, but I just told you half a lie. That is why you must first put on truth about your waist in the battle for the ages. Then the breastplate goes on after. It is Christ's and it guards the heart and the feelings. That is why it is called after righteousness and not of our own. Now the work will not go on forever nor the battle ever be for long. But with God's help it will soon be through.

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Since we have gotten dressed so far, let us now put on the shoes. First one foot in, then the other. Moving around with all that heavy stuff on sure does take a while. It makes you have to think does it not and quite possibly depend on someone else for help. At the very least you would like someone to hold onto for support lest you became unbalanced and should suddenly fall. The shoes of the gospel of peace do just that. Basically it is good news on your feet no matter where you go.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Here are just a few things more. I know the armor is already becoming quite heavy indeed. But soon enough you will scarcely feel it. That is because you have the shield of faith to hold. It is what makes your enemies visible as well as the promises of God more real. So be careful where you point and hold that thing. When handled carefully, you will find the promises and the present cancel out the attacks. You will need it though. Those stingers really hurt when they manage to get them in you.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Finally, we see the helmet which you must first put on. It is called salvation because there is nothing more you need. It protects your head and mind, all those vital organs that without you would soon cease to function. I admit something else would be nice in case you should have to go on the attack. Then nothing functions better than a sword. This can be used as much or as little as you please. Yet make not the mistake of thinking it yours. For it is of the Spirit, forged straight in the Words of God. Nor are you left to fight alone, little warrior. In his house our Heavenly Father sits waiting free to all who truly look.
