Way of the Hosts

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:

2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:

3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

Numbers 16:1-3

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

2 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying

Numbers 32:1-2

And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

7 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?

Numbers 32:6-7

And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

Numbers 32:33

But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

20 Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

Deuteronomy 2:19-20

Gad is presented here as spiritually on the deeper end of things, but not however, right in the middle of it all. It would be galling indeed though, for Gad to think, in all their desire to be first. How much like the demon hoards these are in their way of thinking and also in response. Perhaps you don't know of such a thing just yet and likely never will. The issue though with the demonic and angelic alike though is their preoccupation with rank, form, and title. It, after all, governs anything from how they're set up to how they appear. The greater don't have to worry about it too much. Not as much say as the lesser will for it is they who before the greater must bow. As you move on higher up in sin, the more accountability there is before God. Anyway, all sin is sin and he regards not any particular persons whether they be more important or no.

Father Jacob though knew it all too well, when he once told of the troop that would come against them. Then too they would overcome at the last. It's quite comforting to know that in all the searching and striving for place, God will not suffer any to be lost no matter how small or great you are. Gad has a problem, it seems. These would have liked to have stayed on one side of the Jordan river and not have passed over in the promised land at all. That is why God required them to go in along with the rest of the children for the part they had played in all the disorder that came in before. There came the day when the sons of Reuben arose before Moses, demanding their preeminence be heard. That same day, God appointed them a deliverance service in which fire fell upon them all.

Now I don't mean that to be in Gad, you have to be all burnt up. I'm not saying that at all. What would it look like, some dried up saints in the house of the Lord. The issue remains though, the children of Gad's issue started long before. It happened see, when the men went out to spy upon the land. The children of Gad and Reuben took a prominent role in encouraging the others not to go. Their murmurs proved contagious as they spread throughout the camp. Soon all the people were determined not to go. Nor would the Lord let them as underwritten below. It seems then, that Gad must go in with the rest to ensure that all got the land. Their lot of choice even gave them some of the fiercest kings of all with which they had to deal. Isn't it funny though, that this issue was of the Lord both the victory and the battle with which they had to deal.
