Trying Together

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Matthew 5:40-41

Let's say then that a lawsuit has occurred over matters resulting from evil done in the first offense. There's an offense that's arisen and with it an evil. Suing at the law is done to recover damages whether through restorative justice or otherwise as seen at first in the text. Whether restorative justice is done or the smiting of the justice is all a matter of opinion. So now let the verdict for them all hereby rule. There's the case of the man being sued at the law to have his coat taken away. More than likely it's all he has, himself being a very poor man.

Regardless though, there are damages due and justice must be done. Restorative justice says in this case, come on now, here is also the cloak which covers the greater of the two. Then again is the case of the mile which has been compelled to be walked. It ought to come as no surprise then that damages are not sought by the one who has been made to walk. Rather, the distance is required by those who have come to fetch this one, if any, to court. Why not though, since you're already there just go with him for two. It's only right in this case, isn't it.
