Blending or merging any two of these elements together creates a richer, fuller sound. Although the use of one by itself can be hauntingly beautiful, its occurrence is still more rarely heard. Consider most cultures combine at least distinct elements together to make their musical sounds and some more advanced styles even use three. What if however, you got creative and put them all together now. For instance, words themselves make a beat as we will soon see. Words like

A-men

Hall-el-u-jah

Are composed of beats, respectively two and four, known as syllables, which really count in certain types of poetry. Other words like

Cat

And

Frog

Contain only one beat. Perhaps your culture does it differently. I know I myself prefer the creativity. Here's an example of merging the natural beat

With a long and comp-li-ca-ted word

What are some ways you can combine the two elements of beats with rhythm and sentence structure or the natural sound of words?

Little Ones

Daylight falls

From the walls

In the halls

To the other shore

As should you softly snore.

Mama moon

Softly croon

Dish and spoon

Lay your bed

On your bum, sleepy head.

Say goodnight

To the light

Face your fright

Sleeping now safe with God

In the land of nod.

Lost Things

Lost words

Like so many pretty things

Take flight, find wing

As so many creatures there

Flutter by the land of nod

As they make their way to God.

Where there

A green eyed

Monster lay hidden.

Called by them

It rose unbidden.

Jaws twist to snap

And stun its' prey.

Surrounded by

Scattered wings found

Floating down

Around them lies

Upon the ground.

Should they then

Like so many

Broken birds and

Creeping things

Metamorphose

To something greater

Or would they

Creep within the savage

Heart to heal

The ravage there.

Outlook

Sure life can be

Awfully funny at times

And it's hard trusting

In you.

How trials seem

Hopeless and options

Are few.

Yet the silence

Best reminds us

That God is still there

Even when cabinets

Empty and cupboards

Are bare.

Then the news

At the doctor's

Sounds fearful

Or grim

And there's nothing

More to do but keep

Resting in him.

Or when me

And my spouse

Just had a fight

I roll back over

in bed to turn

Out the light.

The good Book

Says pray and my

Instincts obey

Though at times

The answer may

Sound a lot like

A nay.

But life is not

Futile when it's

Planted in you for

He brings

New blossoms

And planting from

Out of the storm

And the rain.

Now all I find

Is my problems

Have solved with

A bow

Of the head and

A hint of a nod

Though I know not

Quite how.

The most appropriate

Thing to do would

Be to give thanks

To God

For keeping me sane

And for not writing

Down over my life

Ichabod.

Ships May Sail

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

Yet I will sail my boat

Onwards through the storm

Water beaten, pumps sinking,

Overthinking, reaching out.

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

Yet in the dark

There is still a spark

As the waves beat higher

And winds begin to blow.

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

Ships may sail

The flames begin to soar

Through the stormy gale

Till I finally reach the shore

Where peace prevails.

Forever

Would you stand beside

Me forever as my bride.

If I called you

Would you come to stay.

Be true to me always

If a vow I spoke.

Would you be faithful, true

As I promised you?

Forever's not that long, you know;

I would give the stars to you.

My deepest heart desires

To stand beside

And follow by your side

To love, protect, defend

You as my faithful friend.

Without a parting shadowed

As one by God the Father hallowed.

I would forever go with you

To each other trusting, true.

I would travel all your dreams;

Forever's not that long it seems

Until we are one together

Through joy, sorrow, and pain,

In sunny days, or flat-out rain.

I will be there for you.

Heaven hear this vow I speak

May a haven we find

In him whose heart we truly seek

And our hearts together bind.
