Simon Peter
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
John 1:41-42
Then comes Simon Peter into the house. He is first brought in by Andrew and while he is a brother, that does not necessarily mean these share flesh and blood. Very little is said about him here in the text to give clues to his identity. One thing though you do know is that he is the son of Jona and will soon be given a new name. He is a stone of sorts, as one on which to build the church, tear it down, break it apart, or to carry it away. Perhaps we don't know much about him in the natural sense but this one thing we do. His spiritual father could have been Jonah of old who tried to run away from the Lord or his physical father is that of another and just shares the same name. The stone's relation to those who have caused offenses should also be seen. Remember in the gospels how the stone was to be hung about the neck of them that caused offense for them to be drowned in the sea.
It's quality then speaks to the natural progression of sins. We will soon see that here as things go from bad to worse. When you're serving the Lord though, he makes even your rebellion work out in his kingdom. It seems then we already know to which Simon belongs. He is almost of that same one Simon the sorcerer who tried to buy the gift of the Spirit for money. Here he is though, headed back home. In God's house he likewise will do much for the Lord to build up his house now that he's not busy tearing it down. His behavior too of having to be led by one back to the Lord reminds you very much of one that has been through much sorrow and woe. Let's see in a minute to whose house he is or soon will belong. Can you guess? The troubles fitting into his place, the spiritual issues, his being led unable to speak all seem to mean only one thing. This man must be of Gad or very near to that place.
