Putting on Christ

Acts 2:37, 41

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.

The text states that there were souls were added to the church rather than the people themselves. We believe to "the saving of the soul" according to Hebrews 10:39. Why else would Jesus say not to be afraid of man but rather to fear him who can kill "both soul and body in hell" in Matthew 10:28. The soul is the vessel within a body that contains the breath of God's life as in Genesis 2:7. The breath came from him and to him it returns. A distinction is made between the soul, the body, and the spirit of man. 1 Peter 3:19 and 1 Peter 4:6 refer to the preaching of the gospel to the spirits of man after bodily demise. While the full meaning of this is not yet certain, the principle of the dividing between the soul and spirit remains. 1 Corinthians 15:51 refers to the changing of the body's state from mortality to immortality at Christ's command. The traditional teaching of this passage refers to the raising of the body at the last resurrection on Christ's return. However, the exact timing is not specified for mortality to put on immortality. The centrality and contrast of the first Adam of this earth and the last Adam of Heaven is instead emphasized. The certainty of Heaven and centrality of Christ is first of all.
