Never Saw Coming

Psalm 91

It seems we find God our protection against anything we could ever experience. Sometimes being overshadowed isn't such a bad idea at all. See, in Psalm 91 there is a connection between the secret places of God and the shadow of the Almighty. Some of us would do well to let him be our wisdom, guidance, knowledge, hiding place, and strong protection. Oh my friends, I cannot emphasize his protection enough. Now you are hidden from all those things you cannot even name just yet. David here went from one to the other, to those who hunted his life spiritually and back again. Only the protection of God will allow you to escape these things and remain without hurt. God is with you all the time. The same God who understands in all we go through there is still him, the overwhelming presence of his protection.

So also does he follow you throughout your daily life. Psalm 91 refers to being hidden under the shadow of the wings on the Father. You might be tempted to say 'how do you know that.' Ezekiel 36:27 says his Spirit is in the midst of us. See him now as a protection that goes with us if you will. Then again this protection is both physical and spiritual. Over in Psalm 121 it seems to indicate the threefold nature of this protection. For the God who watches over the soul is the same one keeping Israel from all hurt, harm, and danger. Notice how the text mentions treading on the lion and the adder, two very real enemies. So often some of us go out and find an enemy on every hand.

Elijah on Mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal

He lifted up his hands and the fire fell. How some of us need some fresh anointing today. I doi not know if some of you have tried doing ministry work from out of the old and out of the brokenness. But it is very like putting new wine into old bottles and bags. The danger is that soon the old will bust being unable to contain it at all. While some of you may feel that is good thing, being poured out and spent for the Lord, the reality is far different. The text says for the young lion and the adder you may trample under foot. You know just when you think you have everything under control, along come some young lions that you have never met before. Along come some snakes you were not expecting. Some may try to test you, best you, and bite you were it not for the power of God. More than that his protection is found also. See God will give you wisdom how to handle that thing so the situation does not drag you down nor take you away. For his mercies are new every morning and great is his faithfulness. Just when you thought you were down and out and ever so small, God has a way of coming back and making you stand tall in the power of his might. The spiritual armor may protect but only his anointing will teach you how to walk in that thing. See, Psalm 91 is a Psalm of appointment. You were appointed to walk in the favor and blessing of God. Yet without that anointing you will not know how to handle it. Only the anointing of God can allow you to preach deliverance to the Captives, healing to those who are bound. Only he can make the blind see, give the dumb words to say, and turn that which is lame again. My dear friends, you are looking at nothing more than the power of God. Even when all these things come upon you you are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus our Lord. Notice here how the pestilence and the terror have passed me by. The arrow and the plague has left me alone. Even the evil which stalked after has turned back at the hands of the Lord. So can we trust this shield and this buckler today. As our mighty strong tower, our outstretched hand, and the God who flies overhead, he has got you covered amen.
