Mockers

2 Peter 3:3-4

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."

Mockers come because of the delay in his promises. 2 Peter 3:9 says "God is not slack concerning his promises as some men count slackness." See the delay in his judgement. The mockers mistake his long-suffering nature for weakness and a lack of power. See the delay in his coming. His power is no less for his delays; his timing is his to control, not ours. We do not tell the times for they are his according to Matthew 25:13. We can tell the seasons and the end times by the events outside, but the next moves belong to him. The prophecies fulfilled are reminders of his promise-keeping nature. The words and examples of those who went before, whether the prophets of old, martyred saints, and the early church, are all witnesses to his grace through faith as it is made sight.
