Lord of the Hearts and Purpose of Men
And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
Genesis 19:1-2
Here it seems that Lot recognized greatness when it stood before men. In fact, so acutely was he aware of the presence of God and rghteousness there on the whole that it caused him to offer his own home then for sure. Perhaps in the house of Lot a righteous man found as after the Lord, though not as righteous as he surely or just as holy or pure. In fact, Lot's character or whatever these had known him as in their time there among them, it seems mighty strange that in all this, these things are becoming just as the Lord had once promised to men. In fact, Lot's sitting there in the gates meant only one of two things. We'll see in a few moments what these will be. Though, Lot's perception is something that he's managed to make something of himself even in the midst of a peverse and adulterous generation who'd sinned greatly in turning from God. Lot in fact, also had the vision as we were saying for recognizing things of a spiritual nature such as the fact that these visitors should not be left out for time and the weather. It's an offering of hospitality and a refusing of all other things possible. Not content with that answer, the next logical conclusion would've been to drag these all the way home.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
Genesis 19:3
You know how some of you would've done when you know there's very good reasons for being worried but not wanting to say them for sure. In fact, I've got my suspicions though it's not my place is it except to leave it for God left to judge. I mean, it's almost as though the whole region themselves had become possessed of some spiritual interference except for Lot who found himself blessed with some influence himself. It's seen that he impressed upon these the reasons for returning on home particularly that of being their humblest of servants and of wanting nothing more than for these to come in and be treated with a very good evening. You could almost say that Lot's got some sense in the serving purpose far more than these also were thinking. They came bent on judgement and of impartiality as seeking the truth among men but Lot here has got a whole different thing going on. Maybe by now with this nice evening and promises of food and drink and some company these too will have lost sight of eternity.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
Genesis 19:4-6
By this time perhaps you too have forgotten just where you're at and so too the Lord's purpose with men. Just think, it's a long evening and you're tired of your travels only for all the evildoers to come running to your door and make a convergence there in particular. Lot must've been a pretty popular person for all the men to come about and beset him then so. My, it almost makes you wonder just what in the world was he feeding them. Certainly, the knowledge spoken of here is strange enough to remember, though it's probably cost Lot his own knowledge of himself and knowing where to stop with his house order in total. In any case, the angels are there to help guide Lot about there by hand through the rest of the steps of setting his house in order as best as he could. My, God's the best guide for the lost and confused isn't he and so also the most willing of men. If I were him, I certainly wouldn't have been so willing to lay down my life for a certainty. It's a notion isn't it of remembering of whom the Lord is and also wherever he's been that matters not now that there's the Father in Heaven.
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Genesis 19:7-8
If it's virgins they're wanting, Lot had these in plenty though what's a sacrifice of one or two to do with so many and also the most horrific of natures. I'd already said that Lot doubtless was feeding these some pretty terrible things. Though perhaps with their own appetites, it made deliverance of an entirely different nature when it finally came knocking down at their door. In fact, Lot's here willing to give his life for a certainty as said once before just that how much rather would we this God we'd adore. In fact, I wouldn't think would you that a virgin is required much less a sacrifice there unto men. That's why I said as before that Lot had a pretty rough time of it in particular along with the rest of the people who doubtless suffered just as much under this system. Perhaps a little less wickedly would've suited their purpose in general or perhaps there was some other way.
