Great Owl of the Air
The great owl is just like a regular owl in territory and habitat, except for its rather unusual size. Great owls are so called because they are the largest of all birds. Well, not of all birds, but when compared with other owls they certainly are. Their unusually broad wingspan allows them to fly quietly through the night while hardly making a sound. These glide rather than swoop, as do owls of much smaller size. Size matters in everything to the great owl. It's also what allows it to carry off other small birds if it wished as well as whatever creeps along the ground. Other sources of prey include snakes, skunks, rats, and even small possums. The only reaons they don't haul off domesticated animals has to do with the code of ethics. Most animals don't have one, but the owls defintely do. This is shown by the hours and the sort of company kept. By flying at night, these have relatively little competition from other birds of prey in the air. Most other birds of this sort keep a constant daytime vigil. The owl, on the other hand, is what is known as nocturnal. The great owl does everyone a favor by keeping areas clean of what would otherwise be considered a nuisance.
And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
