Fell Among Thieves

11/10/2024

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Luke 10:30-37

Well, at last I have found a Scripture that portrays the human condition perfectly. Look, there's a wounded man without clothes that's been left for dead. What then is the first thing that should be done on seeing the situation? Not to give it away, but the Samaritan did the right thing. First, when there is a flesh wound you will need the following:

water

bandages

clean cloth (if you don't have bandages)

Then you will want to use water and a clean cloth to wipe off the wound. Be careful though so you don't hurt the person more. Now that the wound is clean, you can see how deep it is. Then again, you can use either a bandage or a longer piece of clean cloth to bind up the wound. Be careful though not to tie it too tight. You don't want to cut off the blood flow to that part of the body nor do you want to have it so loose it slides right off. Now, you as the good Samaritan are ready to take this person to an inn or a place to rest for the night. When you do this, you will need to make sure they have something for pain. For this, the wine or the alcohol works wonders. It also lowers the inhibitions and makes people forget they even have wounds and has them more ready to fall because it interferes with the balance. The oil though is also a given, for you will want to feed a sick person. They heal better once they've been fed. We'll talk about why that is later.

But for the moment, the human condition has continued so for over a thousand years through turmoil and wars and all sorts of conditions. See, humans are excellent at following these directions to the letter. What they're not so good at is the why these things work and how can they be made to better fit each situation. That's why we had things like rats in the houses which started the plagues in Europe or doctors burned at the stake for saying that germs carried diseases. That's also why the drug industry of recent years has gone crazy with exotic ingredients and high prices. It seems as good as they are at following directions, humans are really bad at understanding why.
