Origins

- Cinnamomum cassia species

- Native to Asia

- Produced from the bark when stripped from the tree

- Stronger flavor than its more common cinnamon relative

- Dark brown reddish color, thickness of bark

Preparations

- Fever, pain, inflammation, antidiarrheal, antiemetic properties

- When taken orally in excess, liver damage can result along with nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset

- Safe doses between 1-3 grams per day recommended

- Long term use not recommended

- May be used either in powder or oil formulations

- Combinations with myrrh and aloe for best results

- Preservative benefits noted with topical application

- Presumed safe for use in pregnancy with inclusions in food

- Possible skin reactions, rashes, or redness may result
